I am going to be touching up the underseal soon and wondered if I should cover the wheel backing plates too. They are already pretty rusty, so I would just be slowing the rust down rather than preventing it, but I have never seen or heard of this done before. Is there a reason for this or should I just go ahead and do it?

dont underseal all its going to do is destroy your car. clean it up and paint it with some normal car paint, or stonechip

What do you mean by wheel backing plates? That does not correspond to any known part on any Mini I have seen. There are brake drums, discs, sometimes dust shields, and hubs and all of those MUST NOT be under sealed.

Also as stated above, underseal only hastens the demise if your Mini. If there is rust, only proper restoration techniques will save it.

Sounds like I shouldn't be undersealing over any rust then! I think the backing plates are too far gone to clean up and paint to be honest, especially as I don't have any proper equipment. I'll look to replace them in the near future then.

But as mentioned inside, paint them or if you are feeling flush take them off, have them blasted and then powdercoated. On the outside its far better to have them painted or powdercoated.

I have a bath of this stuff permanently in the garage ready chuck rusty parts into. Can not recommend enough and removes ALL traces of rust if you have the time to allow it to work and leaves clean steel. Of course it can't add good metal so if the backplates are too far gone then you will need to replace, but it's sometimes surprising with parts that look in an awful state just how much is superficial.

But a BRAKE back plate is not the same thing as a WHEEL back plate.

Are we going to be pedantic over this. If you take everything literally whats the point. We all know what he means, why make something out of nothing.

 

Not everyone knows the exact wording to describe something. Not everyone has your pertained level of engineering experience, terminology experience etc etc etc. Please remember we do have a large number of young members on here who do not have any engineering background or mechanical knowledge.

 

To come across as belittling and arrogant will not help the case either. You have been told about this before and yet you choose to ignore this.

 

In the perfect world EVERYONE would know exactly what a Klystron Cavity Control unit is and how a Flux Capacitor works but we do not so bare that in mind when you answer someones question. Politely point them in the right direction, don't go shouting at them in CAPS LOCK, there is no need.
