Clutch Pedal Not Returning

Best Answer mini_man96 , 10 April 2017 - 09:11 PM

Mine did this once, I found that the clutch depression plunger (not entirely sure what it's called!) had gotten itself stuck into the aluminium clutch housing due to a build of dirt and grease! If this is your problem you may have to remove the cover then the plunger and clean it out so that it moves freely again. I'll add a picture to show you the part that I mean!
Good luck with the fix Go to the full post

HI all total newbie to forum and Minis

Have a rover 1275 Cooper on R reg.

Went to move it tonight, depressed the clutch to find dawn pedal didn't return. With engine running I am now able to select any gear as if clutch is disengaged.

Excuse the ignorance but I guess its a hydraulic clutch, my concern is that the master cylinder has gone, am I jumping the gun, could it be a slave or maybe even as simple as a return spring????

Have pity on the useless, after all I will grow with experiance.

Thanks

If the pedal is definitely not returning, check the pedal end. The pedal return spring is quite substantial and will not be prevented from doing its job by vacuum developing in the system because the slave cylinder has jammed. A jammed clutch plunger will not prevent the slave returning as there is no positive connection. The system transmits push only.

So pedal pivots or master cylinder are the likely culprits, or maybe the clevis on has come out and the pushrod has jammed somehow.

First you need to read the relevant bit of the Rover or Haynes manual carefully to see what is involved involved taking it apart for a look.

Thanks Folks,

Been working away!!    will have a look asap.

Mini _man96  the picture is great, however the engine I seem to have is the rover unit with the radiator in the grill. Will the clutch layout be the same?

It is likely to just be stuck in with crud.  I had this earlier with one of my 2000 MPi's.  Managed to gradually lever it back out with a flat blade screwdriver, then stuck some copper grease in it and its all fine again now.   Common problem on these if left standing for a while

Yes the clutch layout is the same, but like tiger99 mentioned it could also be a fault with you master cylinder. Good luck with it!
