Hi,

So i had some knocking in my engine when running sounded like the idle gear was knocking around. but didn't seem to make the noise in fourth from what i could hear. however did stop with my foot on the clutch. i know have the gear box off and i think it might be a bearing in the gear box. i seem to have a bit of play on the bottom transfer gear i can almost move that end of the gear shaft.

Im guessing this means a new bearing for the main shaft that end of the box?

can anyone advise

I think most of us would need photos to be able to offer specific advice.

However, from my experience, once anything one thing in the gearbox starts to give any trouble or get noisy etc, then while that can be fix, you can be sure that other items in the gearbox are not far behind. That being the case, I would advise that you consider a reconditioned gearbox.

going to have someone look at the box today and give me a honest opinion on the whole thing including wear on gears. if this is that bad will take out my x pin and get a new box, do you know of where best i can get a relativity cheap recond box?

Good to have someone look it over.

You could pick up a used box, but for all the work and money involved, I would suggest you think that over. The youngest gearbox around these days is at least 17 years old and all the miles that go with it.

Sorry, I'm an 'off-lander' and so I can't offer much in the way of advice where to look, other than ebay etc.

Why not try in the Wanted Section here on the forum?

Try John at Guessworks. He's a member on here http://www.guess-works.com/ . If you look at his website you can see he offers fixed prices so you'll know the price before you start.

4th locks the 1st and 3rd motion shafts together for direct drive, so your initial diagnosis seems likely. It'd need stripping down to see if there's any wear to the shafts as well as failed bearings, I think Guessworks has a good stock of used parts, so even more likely to be a good contact if you need more than just bearings.

You'd have to ask them, I would expect without a diff unless they offer final drive options, the diff housing will be required though as it's matched to the gearbox casting.

John at Guessworks will rebuild you old box just replacing the worn parts and keeping your crosspin diff.

my garage is going to replace the two bearings on the 1st motion shaft cheapest and best option for now i think.

That sounds like a good plan, its better value than a recon box if they're confident that's all it needs.
