Hi everyone, I ve just bought a 1996 Rover Mini which is missing a few pieces here and there. What are some common nut, bolt, screw sizes that are used? For example on the boot hinges, bonnet hinges, side window hinges and general fixing of things in the engine bay (ECU etc.). I'm hoping to buy a variety of sizes  that I can use when needed. I've seen the bag of Mini bolts you can buy from some websites but they are quite pricey.

Also what is a good material to use for replacement of general nuts and bolts as I've read stainless steel is a bad idea because of increased rate of corrosion?

Thanks guys

All of them can be found on the MiniSpares website link at the bottom of the page.

Eg the boot hinge does not use any standard bolts.

I believe A Series Spares do a complete nut and bolt kit for the mini using stainless, might be a easier way to go if you are missing loads

I'd hope that it doesn't include stainless for safety critical components.. it simply doesn't have adequate tensile strength

The problem with stainless is it is not always the correct material for the job.

It is not as strong as the steel used in most automotive bolts.

It can also cause corrosion of the parts it is attached to.

I was just looking at their website, the sets the do look pretty good. Is it metric or imperial used on mini's?

The majority of bolts on a Mini should be UNF with some UNC. However later models sometimes used Metric Fine in a few places where there was a nut rather than a tapped hole。That was not a good move as MF is weaker than UNF due to the deeper thread root and provides less clamping load due to the larger thread pitch. As you need UNF in most cases, best stick to it everywhere. Then there are only AF spanners involved and no confusion and chewed bolts heads.

Almost all the bolts were Grade S which is the old B.S. grade equivalent to the ISO 8.8 for Metric bolts. The US grade 5 is equivalent. On no account use Metric grade 5 which is the stuff you might buy in B&Q, and is dangerously weak for automotive use. Make sure you get matching nuts, property class 8 or S, and please, only from a reputable supplier which openly states the grade of their products on their web site. Lives depend on some of these bolts.

As already said, stainless must not be used on any functional part. Grade A2 is dangerously weak and A4 is too brittle. You can use it on unstressedtrim etc and things like the self-tappers holding the rear window mechanism are sometimes stainless.

The companies selling sets of bolts are mainly selling Chinese junk and should be avoided at all costs. Counterfeiting of high tensile bolts is widespread. Those selling stainless frankly should be avoided for all your automotive needs, because if they have something basic like bolts wrong, what does it suggest about everything else that they sell? There are lots of spivs and fraudsters in the business. Caveat emptor.

You can buy a selection of good quality UNF Bolts, Nuts & washers on-line from Namrick Limited.

Top quality and top service - highly recommended.

Have fun with that, my 89 mini 30 had mainly imperial but did have a scattering of metric, i was told it was during the (change over) period, but was probably what they had knocking around!.
