i need to replace my old ignition barrel, is it any easy job just involving unbolting the old one from the sterring column, disconnecting it and then connecting the new one and bolting it to sterring column, or is there more involved in it because a garage told me i will need to replace the steering column but i cant understand why.

RUBBISH!

two bolts. (might need drilling out) that's it. I replaced my barrel last year when my keys got burned in a building fire. lucky I left the doors open. Had to wrench the old one off and the bolts out etc. but the new one just went straight on. no probs.

I can only think of the reason for a new steering rack to be that maybe ( I dont know this, it's just a thought for why the garage would've said to replacve it) SPI's and MPI's had different systems??

as far as I know, all minis had the same two bolt ignition barrel and it is a 10 minute job to sawp one.

it does have a metro engine in, does this matter for which ignition barrel needed, the garage said i didnt, but need a 2nd opinion.

no does'nt matter what engine you got in so long as its a mini ignition barrel you just replace it with the same

Quite right.

And it's definalty just those two bolts mate don't let them replace the column too.... seriously buddy you coud do this yourself if you have a drill handy, maybe some mole grips, some WD40, and a couple of new bolts (usually come with barrel!) oh and some brute force.
