Hi All- just a quick question: I've a set of front seats, but are without the locking mechanism. Can anyone tell me when this became a requirement in law. I'm currently trying to get a 1981 HL to a rough period correct state. All I can find is info on child seats. If anyone has info on retro fitting the locking mechanism I'd appreciate it.

Cheers

When you say locking mechanism is that just the hook that is under the seat that catches the rail on the floor?

Yes Matt, it is the hook and associated mechanism. I understand it was a requirement after a specific date (could be wrong)just need to know the date so that I can fit the seats as is or source the mechanism before fitting

Ah got you. Not sure what date is was brought in but wouldn't it be best to have some way of them stopping from tipping up too easily?

I had some aftermarket seats that had a different style hook that didn't seem to hold very well

'76 I'd guess, can't think of any safety mods done by the factory that weren't forced on 'em by legislation. Seat security is part of the MoT.

If your car has the metal brackets in the floor, you would need to fit the correct anti-tip mechanism...

If it doesn't, I wouldn't have thought it would need them to be fitted to the seats....?

I know most Mini's have these fitted from the factory, but it might be that yours just didn't have them fitted originally.... Thats if the seats you are wanting to fit are the original to the car....

It also could be thats its a lawfull requirement to have these fitted, but am unsure about the legislation surrounding them....

I agree, 1976.

Thanks folks. The seats I've got are period correct but not original to the car, it got god awful bucket seats ( sorry for any offence there). I think I'll need to source some or find plans to make one. Any recommendations for a good breakers yard?
