Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Just replaced the hub bearings and near side, torqued up to correct setting and the bloody won't move.

If they are preload or taper type
do up to torque setting then back off about 1/4 turn that should give you back rotation.
did you fit the spacer/ distance piece if not that is why they lock up once done up to torque.

Are the Cups fully seated?

These are timkens, they didn't come with a spacer that I can see; they do seem to be seated properly. I need to take it back at least 1 1/2 turns to get movement.

The early Timkens had a loose spacer, similar to the set up on the fronts, the later ones have half a spacer built in to the inner race on the cones, these stand up about 4 - 5 mm proud of the cage, fairly obvious.

 

The only thing I can think of is the cups aren't seated.

 

If you take the hub off and remove the cones (inners), clean the grease out of  the hub and looking through the bore of the hub, you will be able to see the backs of the cups and if they are in fact in contact with the register in the hub all the way around.

Yes the later type with the fixed spacer, they are right up to the spacer all the way around. Hub rubbing on back plate, starting to doubt my torque wrench!

Ah, I think your Hub is worn - really big time worn! I'm guessing here it's not the bearing that's locking up, but the hub contacting the backing plate.

 

I think you'd strip the thread on the stub axle before you could get the nut so tight as to cause the bearing to lock

 

<Edit: If the Hub isn't worn, then it could also be the Seal Boss on the Radius Arm that the bearing would normal seat against being worn. >

Can't see how it would be the hub worn, as pressing the cones in was had work, could possibly be the axle worn now I think of it!

If the bearings have spun, it can allow the cups to seat much deeper in the hub than they should. If the Inner Cup is seated deep enough (and it's not far!), it will allow the Hub to contact the backing plate.
