I've done some searching on here and haven't seen this question. So I'm sorry in advance if this is repeat.

I e got an '86 mini city and was having staring issues. Got starter refurbished and back in car and she started but a little slow. Changed battery and started better. This morning it still sounds like it's struggling to start. Maybe starter isn't strong enough? I recently bought it and the guy said the motor has been bored and updated cam. I have yet to get into it to see the size. Thanks for help.

You say the starter was refurbished, did you replace the battery?

Check and recheck your earths.
I had a slow starter brand new with high compression ratio.
Added new earths and its very sweet indeed.
I am running two earths and a comp ratio of 11.5:1

As was already stated battery and earths are most likely problems but over advanced ignition timing can make an engine hard to turn.

thanks all for the responses.

Yes the battery was replaced. still takes about 2 tries to get it running. i turn the key and it tries to turn over/start and gets slower, so after about 3-5 secs i stop and wait a min then try again and it starts after a little struggle.  I have checked the earths and they seem fine. Not entirely sure what to look for. Rust doesnt seem to be an issue but the earth on the motor has some of the braided metal frayed out near the end. I bought a new earth to add as an extra and will be putting on this week.  i remember reading that somewhere on here for location of the new earth.

I also ordered a new alternator and will be running some tests to see if i need ballasted or regular coil this week so i can replace that as well.

I will for sure take a look at timing! thanks guys

I have an earth strap from the earth bolt for the main loom on the strengthener plate drivers side bulk head to a bolt on the clutch cover just below the clutch slave cylinder.
I have placed my second earth on one of the bolts for the fuel pump blanking plate on the back of the engine and the other end is fitted to the bulk head.
So i have two brand new earths.
Works very well.

I thought it was better having two.
Mine are of very good quality and have been sealed right up to the the hole for mounting them so just have bare metal for the bolts
