Hello,

I've been stock piling pounds and pence for a while now and have enough (hopefully) to have a nice engine built for me.

I'm currently running a bog standard 998, which I do love chucking around but it just lacks a little in overall speed. I had considered buying a stage one kit from Maniflow, but the cost of that, plus getting it set up on a rolling road would make a £300 - £400 chunk of my money vanish.

So, I have a 1275 from an MG Metro sat in the garage that I plan on using as the donor engine. Now from reading, these engine should be chucking of 72 BHP from the factory, which will pretty much fall into my 70 - 80 BHP power bracket i'm aiming for. I want bags of acceleration. Top speed isn't an interest for me, the national speed limit is perfectly fine, so happy to keep the power lower down.

My proposed spec will be: (Loosely based on another thread on this forum)

ENGINE

Duplex timing gears

HIF 44 carburettor (which I think I have and will rebuild)

CYLINDER HEAD

Big valve head

Ported and polished

Roller tip rockers  (1.3 or 1.5) (More reading required)

CAMSHAFT

Kent 266 (I'm aware this is near identical to the Metro Cam, but i listed this in case the current cam is worn)

GEARBOX

Minispares xpin diff

Centre oil pickup

3:4 Diff (Should already be fitted going by Guessworks engine number decoder)

Then throw on a nice Maniflow single box stage one kit.

To aid in acceleration would it be worth while looking at a lightened flywheel if money allows?

The car isn't used as a daily drive, it just my bit of fun on the side when I feel like a day off from cycling to work or if im going somewhere without my wife, as she dosn't really like being in the car.

Have a word with Racingbob on the forum (I know he won't mind you having a chat with him), he pretty much has this spec apart from a lightened flywheel.

You may wish to consider a new distributor with a modded advance curve, you can buy several types off the shelf or have a word with someone like AC Dodd also on the forum who will probably sort your existing one out.

With your spec, I think this will make a nice drive without breaking the bank.

I'd use 1.3 rockers (or just standard)in a road engine.
You ll indeed gain a bit of acceleration Nd a more responsive engine with a lighter flywheel, love mine from minispares.Im also using their cam, evolution 001

If you're looking for acceleration rather than top speed you might consider dropping the FD to either 3.7 or 3.9:1. I used to rally with a 4.1:1 on 10" wheels and could out accelerate most things up to about 70mph. with a 544 cam in a 997.

Interesting on the Evo 001 cam as I am also considering getting one for my 1275 that I am rebuilding. It certainly seems much cheaper than the Kents and Swiftunes considering our horrible Rand exchange rate :goaway:

Thanks for the replies. I've done some research into cam choices and reading about the evolution cam. This lead me to an A.C. Dodd cam (ACD RT) which pulls from 1000 Rpm to 5500 Rpm. This seems like it would give me the extra beans for traffic light rev and go's!

Anyone using this cam?

Also recommendations for an engine builder in the East Midlands area would be great. Ive got A Series Spares and Surf Blue garages reasonably close to me but don't know anyone who has had engines built by either.

Cheers

I'm running a 1293 with pretty much MG Metro spec engine. CR is slightly lower at 9.75 and running twin HS2 carbs. Exhaust is Mainflow Freeflow manifold with a twin box RC40. Cam is MD266.

From my experience with the MD266 you can get very different power curves just by altering the rockers:

- use std A+ rockers (about 7.3mm valve lift) and it will tick over like a sewing machine, good low-mid range torque but soon runs out of puff

- use 1.25 to 1.3 rockers (about 8mm valve lift) gives noticeably more mid range pull, will need to alter ignition curve to get decent low down response

- use Minispares 1.5 forged rockers (about 10.5mm valve lift) and mid-top range really lights up. Carbs and ignition will both need tweaked.

Using the MD266 with the Minispares '1.5' forged rockers you can still get a good tickover. It's well behaved around town but also great fun when you want to make rapid progress.

SMMC- Southam Mini Metro Centre in Coventry, these have a good reputation.
