1098 Running Rich

Looking for a bit of advice if possible please.
After scouring the internet for the generic needle related topics, I haven't found a consistent answer to other people's questions. In summary, I recently did a restro job on my 1977 clubby 1098. It looks great now and has had lots of upgrades, but runs like poop.
I have fitted a stage one kit (which I made up myself) which consists of;
pipercross cone air filter
Alloy inlet manifold
Original sportex exhaust (was on car when I brought it)
Cooper free flow manifold.
I have upgraded the needle to a Triple AAA, but seems to pop a lot, run really poor with a smell of fuel and engine temp seems to stay relatively low. I have brought a AAU, just waiting for delivery. Can you guys suggest any other needles.
I plan to get it on a rolling road as soon as I have it running better than it is now. I've tried to lean it out, but it still seems to run poor.
Any help you guys can give is greatly appreciated
Regards
Luke

+1 on the timing, make sure it's as it should be and your points and dwell are good ...maybe consider going to electronic ignition.
Needles do make a difference, but not to the extent of the problems you are having. Should not smell of petrol at all, maybe reset the mainjet to level with the base of the carb and try again.

have you changed the cam or roller rockers ect
electronic ignition +2
every time you change any thing engine wise the car will need another r/road session.

Thanks for all the help so far, I'll try and answer all your questions in one post.
I haven't fitted a new cam or roller rockers, it has had new engine oil, sparks and oil filter. It has 20-40 in the dashpot.
Once the AAU needle comes I'll give it a try with that. Seems to just run really rich with the AAA, even with it leaned right out.
The jet had been centered as well prior to me installing the AAA, so it might just be a tad too rich.
Thanks for all the help

Not surprised it's running rich, the AAA profile can pass enough petrol for probably 90+ bhp motor.
Use this website to get a visual comparison of the different needles: http://www.mintylamb.co.uk/suneedle/
For a starting point check out other engines running about same hp as yours to get into right ballpark. You 1098 should have ABP needle as std, for about 48bhp at flywheel. The 1275GT on HS4 with about 55bhp at fly used AAV, ABB, or AAT needles which are not that much different to the ABP.
AAU may still be a bit on the rich side, but should be lot closer than AAA. Final proof will be rolling road set-up.

To be honest, I don't think it can be as bad as it is now, sounds like I've got a V8 under the hood ( a badly running v8) I'm not sure how to do the timing so when I have the car fuelling a bit better I'll take it to the nearest garage.
