Hi all

Who do people view as the best supplier of burr walnut door cappings?

Somerford told me theirs are not the correct shape.

I have heard Minispares new holes need to be drilled in the body (door) also.


I have purchased a NOS Jap spec Burr Walnut dash and would like some cappings also to replace the peeling/lifting ones on the car.

Wanting correct shape, holes drilled (without making new ones) and colour that are the same as the originals. (Car is a Jap spec)


I dont think NOS ones are likely to arise (but interested if anyone has some)


So who makes the most original cappings?

Do your original capping a fit ok? If so I would get them re-veneered. There are places out there that restore furniture and do veneering jobs.
Just need to strip off the lacquer and veneer, prepare the substrate and apply new veneer and lacquer. Simply really but needs a craftmans touch to make a professional job of it

Get them repaired? It's surprising what can be repaired when it comes to wood with relatively simple processes. Lifting lacquer can be sanded off and redone, also lifting veneers with careful use of a surgical shaped and a sringe of flue to inject under then weight down or clamp.
Dent removal with water and a clothes iron.
Look for local furniture repairers or restoration companies

I was hoping I could just buy some from somewhere as a gift for my fathers mini, whose are all peeling the laquer off.

Didnt want to mess round with trying to fox them or trying to get someone to fix them

Are the originals veneered, or solid wood? I ask because my ancient Rover P4, which I got rid off during the 1973 oil crisis, had solid wood window surrounds, dashboard top etc. I just sanded them all back to bare wood, and applied multiple coats of varnish, sanding lightly after each coat, in much the way that you would do with paint on the bodywork. Looked great when done.

 

A skilled carpenter could knock up a set of solid wood cappings, but it may be too expensive as a one off.  I assume that aftermarket items are done on an NC router, much like a milling machine, but spinning a lot faster. Get the program right (and you only have to define one side of the car, and mirror it) and you can bang them out on demand, in any type of wood that the customer requires. Nice little job for some cottage industry somewhere.

This is a 1998 Jap spec Rover mini. They are veneer.
