I've been looking at the Minispares C-AJJ4022 calipers as my existing calipers and discs are shot. They look the best value for money available, but the only thing that worries me a bit is this sentence in the description:- "After fitting is complete you will note that the brake pads overhang the disc by approx 8mm, Minispares made the decision to use the 8.4" disc which saves money and improves braking instead of machining the disc to a smaller less efficient diameter and increasing customer costs further."

This sounds particularly "naff" to me. The reason given is that they didn't want to increase costs by machining the disc to a smaller diameter. But surely, decreasing the diameter of the disc will increase the amount of pad overhang, not decrease it. Does this mean that as the pad wears, a step will appear showing an 8mm chunk of unworn pad above the disc?

Also, it seems that a lot of people are using these with vented discs which seems to complicate the available information regarding which pads to use. As a purely road car, I don't feel the need to go to expense of vented discs.

Perhaps someone who has these fitted can explain this for me, or am I completely missing the point here.

I've got a couple of sets fitted up and also eyed off the same things you've picked up on when I bought my first set.

IMO, for just about any use, you won't need a vented disc.

You are correct in regards to the pads wearing with a step, though I've found the over hang probably closer to 3 or 4 mm. I agree that it's a bit odd they way the pad over hangs, they could have made the caliper sit in a bit closer so the pads wouldn't over hang. The Metro 4 pots don't over hang.

I find the stopping power of these incredible, they really are very good.

The only 'thing' I've found with all of them is from new, the seals are bone dry so when fitted up and bled for the first time, you need to remove the pads (one at a time) and allow the pistons to extend (by pumping them out) about half way, then press them back.

Thanks Moke Spider, I was hoping that you would tell me that I was misunderstanding the description, but it turns out to be correct!

If you say the stopping power is good then I will take your advice and give these a try.

Thanks for the heads up regarding the piston seals.
