My mini has never had a problem starting until today , for some reason it spins over with both orange and red light like usual and the goes down to a single red light and when I take the key out and try again I get a red light and when the car finally starts it chugs for abit and then comes to life any ideas ??

That's correct. The orange light is oil pressure which will go off as pressure will build while cranking. The red light is the 'alternator' light, it means that the alternator is using battery power to charge its windings rather than self-sustaining.

It may be related to starting problems but it's unlikely. You need to start checking the basics - fuel, air, spark.

As far as I am aware the basics are all good once it's running and you give it a good rev the light will go out and then all is good , it's just strange as usual when the car has started the light instantly goes out , I have electronic ignition fitted , maybe this vould be the problem ?

Check the fan belt. Might be loose or worn.
