Bolt Pattern For Block To Gbox

Best Answer Abbot , 15 June 2017 - 07:01 PM

Thanks for the feedback Moke Spider. Can now confirm as you said long ones across the front, the flange is thicker, and shorter ones across the rear with short ones at seal end.

The reason I got confused is that when I hand tighten the bolts into the block to try to check it there was some paint and crap in the tapped hole that meant the bolts did not go fully in leaving too much gap between underside of bolt head and clamp face. now sorted and ready to proceed to next level

Hi, I am just at the point of dropping the block onto the gearbox of my 1998 998cc Mini.

I have bought new bolts from minispares (MSSK060) but I am a bit confused as to which bolts go where.  There are 2 options for the bolts both are 1/4 " UNF of lengths 1" or 1 1/2".

Looking at diagrams in Minispares catalogue it looks like long down one side and short down the other but that does not look right when i offered the bolts to the box in terms of threads siting proud of the box surface.  There is also 1 extra long bolt not sure where that goes

Does any one have a plan of what goes where

Off hand, I think I use 1" and 1-1/4" length bolts.

There's 5 long ones across the front side with one shorter one up next to the half moon seal.

The back has all short bolts, and they used to (still did in later years ?) be 2 studs over the diff cap.

There is one longer bolt, around 1-3/4 - 2" that goes through a hollow dowel on the back, next to the transfer housing. This also has a special indexed washer that goes on the engine side. This fits up with a flat washer, spring washer and nut on the gearbox side.

Where I've indicated the 5 longer bolts across the front, if you look at the flange on the casing, it has cast in 'bosses' where these longer bolts are needed. All the others go through a flat flange.

Front side. You can see the 'bosses' here quite clearly

and the back side,It does have some think quite flat 'bosses', but easy to pick from those on the front;-
