Hi everyone,

Just a couple of questions I hope someone maybe able to help me with. I have a couple of white speedo drive pinions whilst both have 17 teeth they are different to each other in that the square cable drive ends differ in size one being bigger than the other.  Now one has come from a 1982 998 Mayfair (Larger of two) the other comes from a 1990 1275 Metro. So I am assuming that the smaller cable drive is Metro and the larger is Mini?  please correct me if I’m wrong.

My second question and dilemma is I require an 18 tooth red pinion to go with my 7 tooth worm and can only find reference to the Metro item which I’m assuming has the smaller cable drive end which my speedo cable will not fit, and the item fitted to the SPi which has a larger diameter pinion gear that won’t work with the 7 tooth worm Have used ‘Guessworks’ calculator to come up with the 7/18 combination. Any help much appreciated. I hope the above makes some sense confusing myself a bit just reading it back.

Cheers.

The small / large squares from best I can work out appears to be a change from 1/8" square cable ends to 3.0 mm at some point.

Thanks for the reply Chris, think you maybe right, have just been looking on the net again and came up with this http://www.guess-wor...play.htm?id=300  looks like I may have to remove the existing pinion from the larger cable drive shaft and fit this one in it's place, hoping the man himself maybe able to confirm this for me.

I'm wondering if you might encounter the same problem at the speedo end.

Can you get compatible cable lengths?  I've used heatshrink sleeving to pack out cable inners. I've also  managed to remove the end connectors from the cable outers on occasion to mix 'n match different types - or Speedycables would put one together for you.

Thanks for the reply Ethel as it happens at the speedo end everything is OK, just didn't want to buy the right drive pinion with the smaller square drive on the other end. Again not sure please put me right wasn't the 18 tooth red pinion only fitted to the Metro I know the SPi had an 18 tooth but that had different dimensions to the 18 tooth red item.

However having gone through trying to explain my dilemma I have had a major change of mind tonight the re built gearbox currently attached to my newly re-built 1293 is the double groove 'E' and to be honest it has been bugging me for ages regarding the ratios coupled with the 3.105:1 diff and 10" wheels the car will be running on. So I have decided to re build the one attached to the 998 which came fitted in my Mini originally, all the ratios are standard but I will still use the 3.105:1 diff as opposed to the 2.95:1 currently on it and obviously I will need to source a suitable primary gear.

So I can only apologize for my original post and say thank you Gentlemen for you're previous comments they are much appreciated believe me.

Cheers

Stuart
