I have an Austin 1300gt engine for sale. I did some research around this engine a few years ago and this is what it seems to be from the part numbers. It was fitted into a MK1 cooper so it had a magic wand gearbox attached. I am by no means an expert on this so If anyone wants to add any corrections to this post and can provide evidence as to the source of this engine feel free to post it!

I was planning on rebuilding this engine to replace my 998cc however I sold my mini last summer and this is sitting in my garage gathering dust, and one of you guys could put this to good use and get some enjoyment out of it.

It's broken up and It will need rebuilding. The head valves are gone as well as the springs. I was originally going to get the head modified for additional breathing etc etc.

I purchased this for £390 about 3 years ago if i remember rightly, so for the sake of the rules I will ask for that however I'm not entirely sure what it is worth in its current state so I am open to reasonable offers.

Located in Dunstable, Bedfordshire. Viewing is welcomed. Due to the size collection is really the only viable option.

Is the engine number still attached, and are there matching numbers on the main bearing caps and block? The head should also be stamped on flat surface just behind thermostat.

Sorry for the late reply guys, I'm working night shifts all this week so cant get to a PC as often as i'd like.

The Engine number that is riveted to the front of the block was broken, I only had the first few digits, It was pointed to me as being a 1300gt engine from the other engine internals.

I'm interested, is the crank standard size and in good nick?

The crank is still in the block, but it spins very freely and smoothly. There was a little excessive wear on 1 the conrod bearings but the crank looked fine, I was going to re-use it as is, as far as i'm aware it hasn't been modified.

Just as an update after comparing some of the numbers stamped on the internals this might be a mk3 cooper S engine, as the con-rod and crank numbers point to that as well as the fact the head isn't stamped above the thermostat.

Don't want to disappoint, but it's definitely not a Mk3 Cooper S engine. This has a different block, different rods, and different crank.

And if the head does not have the numbers stamped behind thermostat then the head's very unlikely to be Mk3 S or 1300GT.

Hey

The cylinder head although having no other numbers on it is still an 11 stud head opposed to 9, can you supply me with any info on this? Also if have any sources I can follow up on when it comes to the internals as the cank number seems to indicate it can either be a 1300gt engine or a mk3 cooper s on the retrominis part number index. And using some of the assistance from other members a few years ago here.

Cheers

I think this is a bit of a bitsa to me? the crank is a late style 1275 maybe even A+ as I think it has the under cuts at the side of the journals. Does the block have Tappet covers or is it a solid block? No Cooper S ever came with a solid block, all were tappet cover blocks. The block could well have been drilled to fit the 11 stud 940 or if it was original then early GT.

Another check to make is the part number markings of the conrods. The 1300GT rod was different to the standard 1300 rod.
