Evening folks - have got an excessively worn '44 thats in desperate need of a refurb - generally massive mileage and now significant play in the splindle - car hasn't been happy lately presumably as carb seeping air as a consequence..... so....into the spares stash where I've a few used but otherwise excellent alternatives -

1.FZX1429 listed for a Metro 1300 HLE, no lifting pin, raised damper cap

2. MG Metro - Tag's gone but assumed to be an FZX1469 - has lifting pin and raised damper cap....(car it came off was an odd one my mum's MG metro - that on breaking post crash was a bit of an AR friday special having a turbo lump , head and 59DM4 dizzy, and oil cooler but with the MG metro cam.....yes it was built that way - so with everything else from that car being mongrelled could well be a turbo carb FZX1435(?))

or 3.......

FZX1462 listed for a Metro VDP Auto no lifting pin and flat damper cap - this one is the best of the bunch and came off a car that had done sub 30K

So plan is to swap in the auto carb - the throttle bracket differs from the MG example but not significantly as it doesn't have the curved cable run but I'm just pausing to question as it has the flat topped damper.that none fitted to minis I've seen has was this particular to those fitted to auto's and will this work ok in a manual???

The HIF auto carb might work if its a case of swapping throttle/choke linkages

Did the swap very late last night the linkages are not an issue and in the name of neighbourly relations just gave it a quick fire up -  needs fettling but runs , well rough as a badgers bum but idle much smoother already just wondering if the different design damper makes a difference or has a distinct purpose???

I rebuild and modify plenty of HIF44s incl Turbo types to vizard spec and the top of the damper doesn't make any difference, its the brass bit at the bottom which does the damping job, unless they are worn.

Did you swap the needle?...could be why its a badgers bum...?

Thanks retroman...yes needle swapped fro the bdk previously used..was running very rough as settings were guessed for 'new' carb.. a little light fettling over the weekend got it purring nicely....
