Anyone know what the foam tubes inside the air ducks behind the grill is? What is their purpose? I have a 1990 998cc Studio 2 Mini. Was not getting any air inside the car from the 2 side vents so i stuck my arm up there. There was a smaller one on the other side. They were in really bad shape so i pulled them out. Any how i now have air coming in. Should they be replaced? Thanks, Gary

Only if you don't want any of those nasty southern bugs crawling up and into the car?

is there anything that would be better to replace them with though to increase air flow but still stop the bugs getting in?

These things are hollow, about a inch thick, made out of the same type of foam for seat padding, bout 3 feet long, much like a giant noodle.

If you are talking about items 3 and 18 on the diagram below, they will prevent water splashed by the tyre from getting inside the car. If it is a UK car the right one is supposed to be 4 in dia. and the left one 2 in dia. If it is Japanese with air conditioning, both would be 2 in dia. from what I can tell.  The nasty southern bugs can get in regardless...

Mine are ok but look like they could be replaced with a piece of swimming pool vacuum hose. I do not have the 4 in. one and that could be harder to get replacement for.

xrocketengineer, you are correct, 3 and 18, but inside of those are the foam noodle things i am talking about. No big deal. just curious. Like Nicklouse said to reduce noise makes sense.

its all part of the big sound proofing kit that was added in the 80's.

yes, you get much better air flow without them but yes they do cut down on the noise that comes through the vents.

i always pull them out the first chance i get.

Same, they were one of the first things to go, as mine were rotten, damp and mouldy. And a pair of tights over the ends of the brig elbow in the inner wing, behind both air vents and inside the car for the ducting to the heater works pretty well as a filter.
