So - 998cc auto. Working well but when I accelerate it feels like fuel starvation (so i have maybe answered my own problem) but how does one test for this? Have only just put it all back together. Revving with no load does not produce the problem. Noticed fault on first major road test.

It does pick up, but slowly, it makes a deep (no air filter fitted type noises) although it has a standard plastic filter case on.

Have checked timing and all good - setting at 10 deg BTDC with vac dis. I have yet to check the advance is working - thought of that after putting test kit away !

Anyone else provide any guidance on testing - how to detect if it is fuel feed, carb, jets, air leak etc etc???

Many thanks all...

Maybe your brakes are binding

Understand the problem. When you push the throttle pedal the butterfly at the end of the carb opens so that the vacuum in the inlet manifold communicates with the room behind the venturi so that air can enter the inlet manifold. The vacuum that is coming into the room behind the venturi should communicate with the room above the piston in the dome om the carb, lifting the piston from its seet so that more air can enter into the carb.

What you hear is the sucking behind the venturi that is not giving in effect of flowing more air.

So, the piston in the dome is stuck (perhaps) or the vacuum behind the venturi in front of the butterfly does not reach the room above the piston in the dome (perhaps), so, the piston is not rising from the bridge where the fuel comes out.

Manifold leak another possibility..easy to check too!

Ive got this however it seems once the car is fully up to temperature and ive "pushed" through it the car runs fine. Try getting it up to temperature then run it a little longer to make sure then give her a spin.  Its my first mini and going from hot weather to cold i was not letting the choke in slow enough.

Try Using a little choke just enough to make it engage should tidy your issue up mostly.

From my thread http://www.theminifo...leaning-filter/  :

Evening all, I cleaned and recharged my Kand N filter the other week now on acceleration it gets flat spots where the pedal is flat but the car feels as if it's holding back and gets noises and throaty with shudders. This happens if the car is cold or hot, I've found sometimes that if I get it hot then push through the flat spot it runs fine from then onwards. Also had a pop from the exhaust today, hmmm.

Seems to me my engine is running lean, ( I can stop it all by using just enough choke to start to engage ). Could this be due to the previous owner setting the carb Air to fuel ratio with a blocked or partially blocked filter ? Also though of taking the spark plugs out to make sure I hadn't coated them with the air filter charging oil I did use a little too much ( smoke from the exhaust) but that's all cleared up now.

Anyone got someideas ?

Phillrulz has got quite an other story. He is driving 'flat out' and then his car is hesitating. He tells us that he has cleaned and recharged his K&N filters.

It is obvious that he used so much oil, that this hinders the amount of air coming in  at full throttle. He should wash out his filters with brake cleaner so much that the overflood of oil gets out again and the filter lets the engine breeth agian properly.

To eliminate the filter try a run without it. Also check the dash pot oil level.

That was my post nothing to do with the filter recharge. The recharge just happened to coincide with colder weather which i failed take into account.  It was due to me not giving it enough choke long enough. Once the engine said it was up to temperature it still needed choke a little longer then it ran fine.
