Hi everyone,

As the title suggests. I am going to replace the old original suspension on Cilla, my 1988 988cc Jet Black.

I can't decide whether to simply renew like for like or upgrade fully to incorporate springs?

Any thoughts, experience or advice?

Thanks in advance

I've had springs for a lot of years and they have never sagged, but that does not mean they're good. I'll be changing them back to cones; these on the front  http://minispares.co...68.aspx|Back to these on the rear  http://minispares.co...px|Back to shop

Replace with rubber. Coil springs with a constant rate on a road going mini do not do the job effectively.

Ive got minitastic springs (fast road) on my mini 30 and there great, been on for 5 years no problem, they ride pot holes and speed bumps at (moderate) speed. However i have standard rsp alloy,s and gaz adjustable shocks. I am aware of the negative press and know people tend to go for or against on the issue. I am also aware of cheap ,dodgy versions out there.

I have coilovers on my current car, and I had coil springs on my last car. I liked the coil springs, I don't like the coilovers and will be changing them out for rubber springs and hi-lo's.

I installed a set of Smooth a Rides on a friends car, if you're not an agressive driver (like him) they are really terrific.

Second this.

It’s early a marmite subject and I’ve taken a bit of abuse. Though I do respect the views of the donut fraternity, if you can give a sprung car a test drive, do it and see if it’s for you. We love ours, they’re fitted to an MPI that was built up for enjoying on the road. We’ve done near 1000 mile in the last few weeks, including a 6 hour drive down and 6 hour drive back to IMM.

I'm on 13 inch tyres (175x50x13) and just feel the handling loses something by not having enough give in the sidewall combined with the springs on a road car. I'm not going to change the wheels and tyres because I really like the look of them and I'm prepared to put up with the 13 inch haters as well. :D What wheel tyre combo are you on?

I didn't realise handling characteristics were governed by ho well a car takes pot holes and speed bumps..

I have 3 mini's, all with different suspension setups

For normal road use my daily 998 is running standard donuts/cones and KYB gas adjust dampers and would be happy to recommend that setup

I've just sent a Minitastic spring off to Mr Spider Nick, when he gets back from his mokeabout he'll be testing it.

We were on 13x7’s that we’re on the car when we bought her, but the low speed steering was a touch heavy. We went back to original Sportpack 13x6’s with Nanking tyres that are a bit easier to low speed steer, don’t look as mean tread though.

The 13’s look great but are never going to give the same feel as 12 or 10’s. More personal choice really.
