I've ordered a new rear subframe and am getting the rear end of the mini ready for when it arrives. However, as you can see from the pic there is corrosion and the end of the heelboard where the front mount bolts in.
Instead of buying a repair panel, could I not make my own and weld a couple of nuts behind it? In the right place obviously From experience though I find that the sheet steel I've got for repairs is considerably 'softer' than the steel used in replacement panels and would therefore not be a good repair.
Finally, I take it that I should use the subframe as a dummy with the repair panel bolted onto it so that I weld it in the correct position _ just making sure it is not too high or too low!!

Yes, you could use the subframe to line up the new panel. Yes, get a genuine panel....you've more chance of everything fitting properly then. You don't want to make a panel to then find that your new rear subby won't fit!

You can buy that repair section.
I bought some and they fitted fine.
Like 10er a piece.
Wouldnt waste your time trying to make one for that price.

Hi, thanks for the replies.
I removed the rusty area of the heelboard and found that the captivated nuts for the rear subby front mounting are actually fixed to a bracket which is welded to the inner sill (or vertical floor edge if you prefer). It looks like the heel board is just a plain steel sheet with the four holes in it. Therefore, the only repair needed is a small repair piece, with two holes in it, to replace the rusty bit I removed I always thought that the heelboard had the captivated nuts fixed on it.
Cheers,
