I've found a starter solenoid amongst my boxes of bits and would like to keep it in the car as a spare, given that I just had a 3 month old one fail on me at the start of a three day trip to Devon. Local suppliers swapped that one without a fuss, but I'm now rather lacking in trust with the replacement! Is there a way of checking a second hand one without the faff of fitting it to the car? It's the same as Minispares part no 13H5952.

It is just a relay. power to trigger terminal small in middle and body to earth should trigger it.

you can then check for continuity across the big terminals.

it is nothing special.

Yes in principle that would work but you really need to check the high current contacts under load, The contacts may pass a small current from the ohm meter but not a full starter load. The only way you will know for certain is to bolt it on the car unfortunately. These chinese crappy ones all fail on the high side contacts...............

I've had the solenoid fail recently too (inner wing mounted type for inertia starter) - new one lasted a week - tenner off ebay from a mini specialist I've ordered parts from before without issue ....stuck I nipped into Moss - £8 (and a few pennies) - Out of habit I don't tend to use them as they're v v expensive for some parts but they do do some very cost effective parts sometimes - added to which they're ½ mile from the office) Moss one comes in a Lucas "style" box and is significantly more weighty - surprisingly made in England too (sad that that should come as a surprise....) , spade connectors are decidedly more "solid" and it's worked happily for the last month or two....

By no means suggesting that it won't die on me - just seems far superior in quality and construction (120g heavier) - costs peanuts - so I've acquired another as a spare sat lurking in the rear bin (that normally guarantees something else will go wrong!)

IMHO I'd far rather pack a new good quality item than a used one......
