I used to use Avonbar back in the mid 80's, they did me a 36/31 1275 head and prepared a block and ground a crank for me amongst other things. They were great to deal with and had a very good reputation.
I thought Ian Hargreaves had started the company up again as AVR classics.

You can't really compare one company's stage 1/2/3/4 head with another company's stage 1/2/3/4 head, there's no specification for a particular 'stage' of tune. Two company's may sell heads with equal valve, spring and guide specs but one may spend more man hours shaping chambers and ports, man hours are expensive.
My experience of Avonbars workmanship in the 80's was excellent, and it's still Ian Hargreaves running it so I wouldnt expect it to be any different.
Do the Avonbar prices include vat?
