I'll try and keep it short.

Was in traffic and I went to open my window to about half way, then the whole bloody front dropped and ended up coming out of the side runner. Thankfully it never broke and I stopped as soon as. luckily I had a little tool box with me! Realising it was an utter PITA trying to do it myself I used some branches to prop the window up till I got home  it worked and lasted the 20 odd miles home.

So, took the mech off and put the little round thingy back into the runners on the bottom of the window, but I was out there for a good 2 hours as the mech will not line back up whatsoever! And even though it all looks in good order, it still drops on the front now. The channels/runners are mint.
Followed the Haynes manual to no avail. The mech is nowhere near the door holes to line back up, no matter how much I wind it up/down and it is all put back together correctly!

Any thoughts?

Got it up with some bamboo now as it started pissing it down and I had enough :P

Cheers

Is it the correct side mechanism? they can be put put on upside down from the passenger side. Is the channel thingy in the right position on the window?

Yep definitely the correct side mechanism. I'm not too sure regarding the runners on the window to be honest, could well be something like that though. I haven't had the mini long but even on the way home from picking it up I noticed the front of the window was dipped forward slightly. Will have to have another go tomorrow, just however I tried it wasn't allowing me to align the mechanism holes up.

I think you are going to have to remove the winder mechanism again and make sure that the gears on the back are meshing OK and the winding arms go up and down together. While it is out, check that the window glass slides up and down evenly. I would suspect that the rear arm of the winder is not winding down with the front arm, so that when you lower the window the front arm is pulling the glass down more. Although these mechanisms look hefty the arms and gears can be bent fairly easily. The giant spring is to take the weight of the glass so making winding up and winding down equal force. If it winds up hard and winds down easy, its probably the the other doors winder.

If you are lucky, it might just need a clean up and a good greasing.

Thanks, I've got a feeling you're right about one arm not winding with the other as much, and now you mention it, the spring on the smaller gear didn't look under as much tension as the other was. It definitely looks as though someone has been messing about with it before anyway, so maybe one of the arms has been off before and hasn't been put back into the correct position to mess with the bigger gear

There are alignment marks on the gears to help you get them in the right place. I fought with one for hours before I found the marks, then once lined up it worked perfectly. I couldn't see them till I cleaned off the dirt and grease from the gears.......

Brilliant, thanks Magneto! I will give it a go tomorrow then. I think it is an alignment issue with the gears/arms then. Will report back tomorrow

Also I've been going by a photo I found on here and the Haynes manual. Basically my neighbour was holding the window so it was sitting half way down and the arms of the mechanism pointing downwards (drivers side), when sliding the little wheels into the runners. Then push the window down and the mechanism slips into the cutout.

Does this sound right? Or is there a better way. I've never done it before you see.

Thanks!

Yes, that's it exactly. It can be a bit of a pain especially if you've still got the mastic, (which seals it to the inner door panel), on the outer edge of the window regulator. I find it easier to remove all the mastic, (which allows the regulator to slide around a bit easier), and renew it when the regulator is back in position, before screwing down.

Thank you chaps! the bamboo sticks, although not ideal, they are doing a very good job of keeping the window up  I keep going to open the window though >_<

Anyway, yes the gears are way off, enough that once the winder is 3/4 round the little gear is pinging off the big gear! So will align them properly this evening using the little marks you mentioned Magneto :D so hopefully get it back on tomorrow without much fuss!

sorry to hijack your thread, but on the subject of window winder mechanism, how do you know where abouts on the glass the channels sit? I recently had to change my drivers side winder as it was causing a right headache, once I took it out I realised that it was a passenger side mechanism, so I replaced with a new one, correct for the drivers side. I also changed the channel that sit in the glass it it has two front ones fitted instead of a front and back. don't get me wrong, it works in the position that I have fitted it, but I wasn't sure how to know where to put them?

Cheers!

The channels that fit onto the bottom of the window glass are fitted with the thicker part towards the middle, and the outer ends, (with no track for the winder), 3/4" in from the edge of the glass.

Going back to this thread - does anyone have a picture of the gear side of the winder mech regulator to show the arms in the full UP position?  I am unable to find the alignment marks on the gears and I think my gears are off.  Many thanks!
