I'm looking to replace the door on my mpi see here, as the skin has rusted away at the bottom (i'm pressuming that if the skin isn't fully attached to the door frame it will not pass an MOT????). I'm just wondering I've been told that the side impact bars in the doors can just be unbolted and swapped over to the new door, is this the case? and how easy is it to do?

Cheers ;D

how good are you at bodywork? doors are easy to reskin yourself. grind around the edge of the door to get the old one off. theres a couple of spot welds here and there that need dealing with. clean it up, repair the frame if it needs it. sit it in the new skin, clamp it up and hammer the lip over. finally weld the tops and you're done. I will try to do a piccy guide when I do the other one on my van.

i dont think a rusty door will fail an mot!! to be honest i dont think u need a door to pass an mot!! tho its probably illegal to drive without one!! silly contradictions in the mot law!!

As Minipip has said, it depends how bad the door is. Some vehicles don't have any doors at all, but if you have doors, they need to be secured correctly, open and close correctly and not have any rust that causes any sharp edges on them.

Not really got the tools for doing bodywork myself, i'm fine mechanically, but not for this kind of job.

rust isn't terrible other than the fact that it pretty much runs all the way along the bottom of the door. I was tempted to see if it would pass the mot but then if not i've just wasted £40.

why not just cover it over with bodge tape to get it through the MOT then sort it out afterwards. As long as it is not structural rust then it will be ok.

The only other thing is that it is not sharp and dangerous, hence the use of bodge tape.

THIS SHOULD ONLY BE USED AS A TEMPORARY MEASURE
