I have a hif44 carb that appears to be a mix between a standard carb and a turbo carb but I cannot tell which one it is meant to be. It does not have the groove at the top of the dashpot but I understand that they are not mandatory and it does appear to have a seal in between the dashpot and the body. There is also a connector for a pipe on the part that connects to the manifold and I have only ever seen these on turbo carbs but maybe they were used on n/a carbs too. Any idea what it is for? I have heard the term balance pipe but where exactly should it connect?.  Finally the throttle and choke cams are usually found on the opposite side for turbo carbs but perhaps this could be a carb that somebody has previously converted to turbo spec.

Any help is much appreciated.

No, the biggest clue is the flange on the dashpot for the clamp to secure the damper. The throttle cable also attaches on the other side. It could be converted for turbo use with a service kit

OK thanks for clarifying. Any idea why there would be a seal though? My other 44 carb doesn't have one.

Looks like a turbo carb to me. The carb has the float chamber venting pipe present, unlike the NA carb where it's blocked. Also the body is machined for the dashpot seal.

Phil.

Thanks phil. I guess it just has the wrong dashpot fitted.
