What's the cheapest/most effective unleaded conversion route.....

Fed up with adding lead replacement everytime I fill up!

The ONLY way to be able to run unleaded without a lead additives to get hardened valve seats put into your cylinder, will usually cost about £150, then theres the cost of taking the head off and putting it back on, and the cost of a gasket.

Or you could try and find an existing unleaded head, usually can be had for £50-£100, and then again, the cost of removing and putting a head back on and a gasket.

how much fuel do you use a year and how long before you cover the cost of hardened valve seats ?

If you run a decent additive ( aka Castrol valvemaster plus ) which also has an octane boost, not only will you not need to convert, but you engine will be much happier for it with better sconomy and power.

1 bottle valvemaster is about 12 quid now, which treats 250 litres of fuel, so you'd need to use say 2500 litres (550 gallons) of fuel before you're even starting to recoup the cost of conversion.. That's a very conservative 20k miles.

The cost of conversion as you have rightly said is one of convenience, not economics.

I've got the chance of an unleaded 998cc head. Is it just a straight swap to change it over? Taking the head off & refitting it is no problem, but I'm just concerned that it might not match my engine. are there a lot of variations in 998cc engines?

Any advice would be much appreciated
Thanks
Mike

Straight swap. BLAHAHA. If it's like El Gordo it will fight you all the way till your done. But apart from the car fighting it's straight forward, don't know about 998 variants.

I havent even looked at the link but i can say for certain "DONT BOTHER IT WONT WORK"

only things that work are an additive like Castrol Valvemaster etc or getting hardened valve seats put in.
