Every time the fan comes on the volt meter drops to the bottom of the dial and the oil temp shoots up, as soon as the fan goes off the volts are normal and the oil temp falls back to where it should be. The earth point in the engine bay as you face the car from the front is all fresh, I can't think what else it could be, I've looked around for other wiring issues.

Is the the ground point near the expansion tank related? Everything else on the car seems to be working fine it just seems very isolated to the fan coming off and on, I've unplugged the fan as it was running and all goes to normal immediately

Think my next step is to run a new ground wire from the black ground wire out of the fan to a know ground point and see if it's that bit of wire there maybe

Anyone had the same or similar problem? How to fix?

Well, all of them use the same common ground point per page 10 of the following link:

You really need to clean well that earth header located per page 191 of the link:

http://www.theminifo...attach_id=68242

 

The extra ground for the fan should not hurt.

I'll clean up the earth at the expansion tank, I was stating at the Haynes diagrams and I really thought the earth point for the fan was on the left side of the car as you're working in the engine bay, not left side of the car as you're driving

I cleaned up the earth on the left as you're facing the engine, but looking at that diagram I can see it's quite likely that earth, just a nightmare getting me dremel in there without dropping the coolant
