Bought myself a Colortune this weekend to set the carb on the Mini, timing and points are all correct, I have a couple of questions....

When running at idle with a bunsen as you open the throttle and there is a bright yellow flash, is this normal?

Why with a product that revolves around colour are the instructions in black and the colours 'described'? ;)

When using a colour tune, there are basically three tests.. .

1. At idle, the visible flame should be blue in colour
2. Under acceleration, the flame should go Yellow
3. At speed, high RPM, the flame should be blue again

so as you open the throttle, the flame should change from Blue to yellow and then back to blue again..

Thanks Guessworks, nice simple instructions like that with the product would be nice.

One other question, I have a flat spot under acceleration, this is accompanied by a dull roaring from the carb area, I have ruled out the timing could this be an air leak, when tuning it this weekend I noticed there was a slight petrol leak around the jet.

Also, when ideling I see the blue flame but get quite big flickers of yellow, any idea of what the symptom of this would be.

I'm no expert, but one cause of occasional orange flashes is that the float level is too high, so every now and again some extra petrol gets in and causes the rich flashes.

And basically colourtune works by the colour of the burn, at the correct ration or air to fuel (about 14.7:1 or something like this) the flame is a rich blue colour, if there is too little fuel/ too much air then the flame is a lighter, whiter blue. But if there is too much fuel then the flame turns orange. So its usually easier to set it rich then back off a bit than the other way around.

Not if you are running a single carb. There is an argument that cylinders 2 and 3 burn slightly differently due to the Siamese port, but it won't make a great deal of difference.
