I'm thinking of getting a go pro for Benny (Dave's got a standard dashcam) in the absence of a 12v socket.

Any good? Would it work as a dashcam or should I just wire in a socket and get a cheaper dashcam?

It would work yes. Although if getting a 5 I'd have the screen off as it uses more power.

If you spent that on a dash cam you would have GPS and speed displayed. Dash cam at GoPro money would have all the bells and whistles

Dave's got a 512g nextbase cam, definitely not the best on the market but basic hero price.

I do however catch what you're saying x

I can highly recommend a Mobius cam. Fantastic as a dash cam, lovely quality, very small and pretty cheap.

I've got a mobius (somewhere), I was considering putting it up for sale or giving it away tbbh, I found the picture quality not the best and it gets SOO hot :o

It was my first dashcam after having an accident with a liar 🤥

I'd quite like to get one of them dash cams that has front and rear facing cameras. I think that's a Nexbase

What about a road hawk hd? I bought mine after seeing what the various lorry driving firms used. Check out footage on YouTube etc.

Ive got a Nextbase Duo in my other car, got a basic dashcam in my Mini though....

The Nextbase I have is a very good quality picture, both front and back. Also has GPS and speedlogging too.... I can recommend it, but its a bit expensive for what it is IMHO...

It's the GPS and speed logging that would make me wire in a socket over getting a GoPro

There's WAY better cameras about these days at like a fifth of the price.

I did have a Go-pro, but found it awful to use, in particular, that I'd select 'Video' and when the shooting was done, it would change to something else, eg, I'd end up with 10 minutes of stills. While I could select Video, I couldn't lock it to that.. The video was ~OK~ but the stills were shocking.

I've gone to a cheap 'knock off' version banded 'ExtremeX'. Apart from being heaps cheaper, it's way easier to use and has better video & stills. There's also a free AP for pairing it to the Ipad for full control as well as live video, so I can live check what's going on. The Go-pro has a similar AP but I found it light-years behind.

I also just bought a 'movii' (another knock off), which is cheaper again, I got this one for the Drone, but am yet to try it.

Don't consider one, get one. As soon as something happens, you'll be saying I should've got one.

Don't get a Go Pro though, sure they're good as cameras, but in a car you want it hard wired so that when you turn the ignition on it starts up and starts recording and retains the last x hours depending on card capacity.  Ideally you'd have a button to press that makes the camera retain the last x minutes, so if something happens it's created as a separate file.  Then WiFi so that when you get home it connects to your home network and automatically transfers the captured files to your server.

Front and back cameras with the rear one connected to a screen so you can use it as a reverse camera, triggered by the reverse light switch.

No idea if the above exists, not really looked, but it should because it's all pretty straightforward.  I've been considering one of those Android car stereos that has a reverse camera built in, mainly because I can't see anything out of my rear window, but no idea if they record or take a second camera and have been putting off buying one as I need to do the entire dash first.
