Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but these are old gearbox's, are you changing gear too quickly? Clutch right to the floor and feed it in letting the synchro do the work. If it still crunches let us know.

It's done 70k , it's actually just had an oil change ! Cheers
Unfortunately then, if its not had a rebuild its sounds like its going to need one. Its a very common problem. You'll find lots of threads on here relating to it.

Only solution is rebuild time, that said though when i first got my mini it would crunch going to 3rd and it didn't get any worse for the next 40k i did in it until it was time to remove the engine for a rebuild due to excessive oil consumption! You can probably get around the issue with a bit of heel and toe or double declutching as mentioned above

Mine was crunching from 3rd down to 2nd .I was lucky I dropped on a low mileage 1275 engine with gear box .

If it is allowed to continue to 'crunch' when changing gear, the gearbox will wear further.
There are two options:
1. Re-build the gearbox
2. Double de-clutch when changing gear (not heel & toe, that is something entirely different). The gearbox in the early Minis had syncromesh which didn't last long and we all double de-clutched back then.

I tend to just give mine a bit more gas when I go into 3rd and it's happy. May be worth considering changing at a lower speed, and have a slightly slower transition?

If you double de-clutch it is no problem at all.

Or perhaps make the decision to do a box overhaul and at the same time tweak the engine as well

Mine crunches going into 2nd, if I double clutch it goes in no problem :)
Mine will be coming off the road next year to strip the engine and gearbox.... might be changing to a SC gearbox though - because I want 1 and dont care about the noises :)
