Hello,

I've just replaced the rear wheel bearings on my mini pickup which I'm rebuilding.. I've torqued them up to 60lbft as specified, but the the hubs seem very tight when turned by hand.. they are new tapered bearings with builtin centre spacer - any idea what I've done wrong (if anything)?

Thanks

What bearings did you fit aftermarket? Did you grease them correctly?

MiniSpare gen ones - I packed them with grease as I was installing them

Sounds like the outer races are not sitting flush into the hub, maybe some dirt in there

un torque them and do them hand tight and then nip to the next split pin hole probably about 10-15 ftlb.

this is the way a lot of hubs including the Kad rear discs need to be done

In regards to greasing the bearing, never fully pack them with grease. It will cause them to burn out.

There's some advice from Timken on this in this thread (which although for front wheel bearings, is applicable in this regards to rears)

The Bearings are pre-loaded when fitted correctly, meaning they will feel a little tight, but but 'tight'.

I had this with a Drivetec bearing(from a local supplier) when I'd fitted it I greased the bearing thoroughly then installed it on the car, if I nipped it hand tight then next available hole there would be play when tested with the wheel on(mot failure) if I went hand tight+2 holes it was too tight(also a failure) Now I have to replace the bearing for the second time(along with rear brake overhaul and some welding
