The other night my brand new starter spun but wouldn`t turn the engine. I took it off and checked it over, refitted it and it started the engine 3 or 4 times with no bother. Tonight I went to start up and it`s just spinning again, what causes this please? Grateful for any ideas.

Now you`re asking. Standard variety from Mini-Spares is all I can tell you other than not of the pre-engaged type.

The bendix drive must be sticking or maybe your battery voltage is low. Could be a dirty battery terminal or faulty earth strap. Clean all terminals and charge battery and try again. Doubt if the bendix drive is jamming or sticking.

as above Bendix might need cleaning and lubing. Graphite power (or a pencil) is the right lube.

If not already solved, assuming we're talking an inertia set up  - sometimes  worth checking all solenoid connections too - particularly the earth screws and for clean metal underneath
