Is it possible to change my seatbelts (old fashioned fasten and adjust yourself) for modern inertia seatbelts which will self adjust, be easier to fasten and 'lock up' in the event of an accident?

I mean could I do it?

Hi
I assume you mean the rear ones?
Somerfords sell a seatbelt plate that's welds into the rear companion bins that holds the inertia reel.
It feeds up to the exsisting shoulder points and down as normal giving you full 4 point rear belts.
This is the same as what originally comes on the late mpis

I think there is also a way you can mount the belt at the shoulder for 3 point inertia too.

If it's the front ones then as long as the existing mounts match the inertia belts then no reason why you can't do it. Take a look at some pics of Minis with modern belts to see if they will fit yours.

I'm suggesting this because I seem to remember my old 850 having a rail on the floor to attach one end of the belt, maybe I imagined it :shy:

My 74 Clubby has old style inertia seat belts which attach to the lower side of the companion bin which is not the strongest section unlike the front.

I put some new inertia ones in the front of mine, just bolted straight in where the old ones were. The thread is a standard size for the b-pillar and base. I used some Australian Standard approved ones, you'd have to get the correct ones for where you live

This is where the inertia seat belt is installed on my 74 Clubby. Its does not have the later fixing point which is on the front of the companion bin. Also the doubler plate on the inside is where i have added reinforcement as there was only the bin skin which to say the least is not fit for purpose.
