Normally, i'm a very patient man, but this is pushing my buttons!

I successfully managed to get two gears to lock and bolted a steel angle across the top face of the gearbox, bolting through the dowel holes, to give something to react against.

...and bent the angle.

so out comes some heftier alu extrusion again bolted across the top face (and the box flipped upside down), no bending this time!

...but the box wants to lift off the floor due to the torque.

so i get her indoors to stand on the upturned box, and nothing moves...

so then a length of thick wall steel tube goes onto the 18" breaker bar...

and nothing moves!

so then the blowtorch comes out and warms the nut for ten minutes...   which normally helps release even the most stubborn nuts!

and nothing moves!

at this point, the breaker bar and extension seem to be the weakest part of the whole assembly and i'm getting worried that its going to snap.

do i need to invest in an impact wrench gun jobby or is there another secret?

thanks in advance :)

Jack up your daily and put gearbox upside down onto piece of chipboard and lower daily onto gearbox but only just touching. Now you can undo thte 3rd motion shaft nut. Long socket and even longer bar.

Take it to your friendly back street garage and get them to attack it with the windy gun they usually use to overtighten your wheel nuts.

I agree with Ethel, 5 min drive and a minute's work instead of a lot of frustration. I wouldn't heat that nut/shaft too much, wouldn't want to change the hardening......

I know many use impact tools to undo these nuts (and likely do them back up too!) however, given that the gear teeth have been case hardened and the bearings, shafts etc, such shock loadings and none to good for them.

As Whistler has suggested, or a mate of mine clamps his within his workbench and the floor. I 'clamp' mine between timbers in the press.

I use a shop cloth wedged in the gears and an impact wrench, the shop rag takes the impact off the gears.

Agree with Moke, can stress the teeth with an impact wrench. Long bar and decent socket should do the trick.

I hate to ask the obvious, but have you bent back the locking washer?

Thanks all for the replies. Yes the lock tab is knocked flat and yes i'm going the right way! I don't think i got it anywhere near hot enough to effect the hardening.

Persistence prevails when all else fails i suppose, so will try your car on top trick! And then take it to the local garage!

Cheers :highfive:

I bolt the gearbox back onto a (scrap) engine block when undoing this and the first motion shaft nut. It's a right pain but always prevents the gearbox casing from turning in reaction to the socket and bar.

see if you can get a purchase without the extention piece too, as that will make it more awkward to get a turn on the nut, also you should have the box in 1st and 4th, as this ios the strongest combination, I have heard of boxes pulling teeth off in other gears.

:D i got it off!!

And i feel very proud of myself! Haha!

I gave up on the Halfords 18" breaker bar that was twisting a lot with a long tube applied to the end, and got an old T-bar that came out of my granddad's garage many years ago. That proved a lot more solid.

So stood on the box (i'm a big chap!) i could lean on the 5 foot tube over the T-bar. It went with such a bang that i thought i'd snapped something! But sure enough, the nut was loose! Hooray :highfive:

Thanks for all the moral support guys, its good to know that other people go through this
