First symptom is smoke or steam emitting from the breathers, its a constant flow.  (Carb is weber 45, so the breathers run into a catch tank)

Another is that the radiator water is brown and slightly frothy.

However compression is high and consistent across all 4, (cant remember exact figures) engine seems to run well without overheating.

Is it possible to have good compression but still have a head gasket issue?

The car has been stood for about 4-5 month during bodywork etc.  I wondered if it just needs flushing through and using or if i do have a more serious issue brewing?

Engine is quite highly strung (for hillclimbs), 1380, race cam etc.

First symptom is smoke or steam emitting from the breathers, its a constant puff.  (Carb is weber 45, so the breathers run into a catch tank)

Sorry but it can not be both. is it constant or puffing?

sounds more like the lack of use.
