Hi everyone Ive been on here for many years and built quite a few a-series engines from 998 screamers to 1275 t3 turbo builds but have now came back but in a different form - A 82 RWD Morris Ital Ex BT van. The spec for this engine build in sort is; A+ 1310cc, 12.5:1 C/R, race spec head 29x37, 296kent cam, maniflow stage 2 system, Aldon Red, MED alloy/alloy duplex, crank been fully worked - wedged, bladed, cross drilled. Rods lightend and shot peened, flywheel lightend then all balanced. Single piece prop, 3.6FD, 3J LSD ect...... I think I already know the answer to my question but just wanted to make sure, the intention for the engine is to be used for fast road/drag racing 115BHP+ Ive had this sort of spec on my mini about 6years ago but had a HIF44 and not a Weber, it preformed very well with the SU carb but this engine is pretty much built for weekends and not everyday like the mini was.

I have a problem with length (lol) with a Weber carb with a 6 inlet or even a 2 3/4 maniflow inlet it just wont fit in a Ital, Unlike the mini I cant just put a box in as the engine is facing the correct way...... the only option with having a Weber on my Ital is using a swan neck, but as I already know this defeats the object of a 45 Weber or is it actually better than a steel Maniflow inlet using a HIF44 with a ITG S/S filter? I know that usually a Weber will give around 7hp over the HIF with the correct manifold but want to know what everyone else thinks. Thank you, Pete.

i would not. but i might consider an downdraft may be an IDF rather than an IDA as it will sit lower.

Haven’t really thought about a IDA, but then I’d have to worry about clearance for the bonnet as most minis with a IDA have their bonnet cut? Pete

now you have added the picture i am going of the downdraft.

what i would do is get on the PHONE to maniflow  (note the word phone) and see what they do for the old girl as  a non swan neck manifold is way better than a swan neck. and get it chromed before fitting. outside only needed.

but a telecom van with a side scoop could still be fun.

What about a 28 36 DCD, that should just about give the clearance?

never liked that carb for performance. I got better results from an HIF.

The maxium length I have to fit is roughly 220mm under the bonnet, as nick says the turret gets in the way. With my calcs with the 2'' 3/4 maniflow inlet with a weber & short trumpets would be 250mm ish?

Just thinking outside the box, (literally), are the suspension mounting points below the proposed line of a carb set up and do the suspension components completely fill the wheel side of the turret on full upward travel, or, is there room to enable you to cut out some of the turret and replace it with a reinforced box section?

The box section is for the shock/trunion mountings - (bolts coming through with nuts in pic) The carb sits pretty much bang on where the nuts are annoyingly, only other thing I can think is getting maniflow to make a long raised inlet so it clears? Would have to be around 4'' higher I guess though.

I think i can see me just going with the HIF44  :bah: . So its a no to the swan neck for power over the 44?
Thanks, Pete.
