Wasn't me who fitted them, previous owner did and was on my to do list to change over in the future, well it broke when driving home yesterday so that means I'll be doing it sooner rather then later. Just double checking what parts I should spend extra money on.

Donuts / Red Spot Donuts

Cheaper Hilos / Expensive Hilos

Cheaper Cone Compressor / Expensive Compressor

I'm not too bothered about money or ride quality but will pay extra for better handling/better quality but if there's little difference between them I'll save the money. Also is there anything else I need or should replace while I'm changing them?

I don't think you need a cone compressor if you're fitting hilos although I've never fitted new cones in the front which will be taller than old ones.
I only ever wind the hilo down, remove the rebound rubber and pop the hilo out followed by the cone, but my cones are 45 years old.
I'd fit red spot cones from a reputable supplier - minispares, and genuine hilos

the original HiLo have the shaped contact point to the rubber that makes the compression rate a bit stiffer so as to give a more "sporty" ride.

i have only ever used them with standard rubbers, there was nothing else available back then.

as to the tool. it is always good to have even just to hold the rubber in place when working on other bits and to make sure the rubber is seated correctly.

Standard OE specification cones from Mini Spares are excellent.

Ouch well that was expensive, I've bought red spots for the front, standard donuts for the rear. The better quality hilos and the cheap tool. Fingers crossed we get some good weather next week so I can fit the front ones. Cheers guys

Don't go mad with the compression tool, you only need to squash the spring just enough to get the upper arm spindle back in.

Dumb question but I'll be working the next few days so need to know, I bought this kit off minispares

http://minispares.co...c/HILO-SET.aspx

Do I need to buy knuckle joints with this kit?

very good question,  I would get on the phone.

they show the cups which is a bit odd. I would not have expected knuckles to be included. now if yours are ok then just re use.  or order some incase and as for spares.

if you look at the 2 part set it does say it comes with the cups.  I guess the thinking is you will be popping the knuckle out of the cup to remove it from the old trumpet so as the cup is the wearing part you may as well replace it.

Yeah it came with the cups but no knuckles so I've ordered a set of 4 off ebay, the cheaper hilo set came with the knuckles and because I've never done that part of the suspension before I never thought to look to see if I needed them when I bought that set. Luckily I won't be able to do anything over the enxt few days so hopefully they'll show up before I get a chance to work on it again.
