Hi,

1998 MPI.

I spilled a lot of clutch fluid around the master cylinder when topping it off. Didn't realise and left it for a couple of months. Saw the paint being eaten away and decided to strip it down, repaint and refit.

What I've done:

* Removed master cylinder

* Used a rebuild kit, fitting new seals, etc

* Replaced the hard line with a flex line

Once I got it back together I cannot for the life of me get it to bleed. I started working back from the slave cylinder, cracked the union on the slave, no fluid being pumped through. Cracked the union on the master, no fluid being pumped through.

I removed the master cylinder itself, held my finger over the output and pumped a few times trying to build pressure, it squirted a bit but when not covering the output it won't pump even a tiny bit out. Even pumping quite vigorously (ooh err) it won't pump out even a little.

Any ideas? Am I just bleeding it like a whopper?

EDIT: Preempting any questions:

* Yes I put the clevis back in

* Yes I am following the haynes guide on bleeding the clutch

* No I don't have an EZ bleed kit.

I'm guessing there's a leak in one of the new seals? It all points to something that's been done during your rebuild of the master cylinder.

Not sure what I did. I just took everything apart to check for issues, reinstalled and rebled. Bled immediately, properly. Went on a hoon and can't find any leaks whatsoever.

Shrug! Chalk it up to inexperience.

Definitely not. Everything looked as it was. No idea. It's working now and I've done about 100k on it since.

i had the same issue with the mini van, fitted a brand new master and could not get it to bleed up, i think the master needs kidna priming for it to work first time off. I cant remember exactly how i got it to bleed as i didnt have a working easy bleed at the time although that would have sorted it. Thing i put some compressed air into the rez and pumped the pedal. But its not just you!

When they are dry or just been fitted up, they can and often are, slow to get going.

With the new ones, it seems the assembly rubber grease they use often blocks the ports. I've found a Pressure Bleeder can be helpful to kick start them.
