Hey there fellow Mini enthusiasts! I have a question about the sidelights.

I have a 76 Mini 1000 that was heavily modified by the previous owner. Have been restoring it back to original spec and I've swapped out the angel eye headlamps for the original Lucas sealed beams.

Problem is I dont seem to have any sidelamps when I turn on the lights. I know some models had the pilot lamp built into the sealed beam, and some used the indicator lamps as the sidelamps. What is the original spec for a 1976 Mini 1000?

The connector for the sealed beam has 3 prongs, so Im assuming one is for the dipped beam, one for the high beam, and the other is the ground?

the park lights were a separate set of wires.

the park lights were a separate set of wires.

Which would mean that they use the indicators as the sidelights yes?

Hmm... always felt that this was a safety issue...

nope. you have your three wires for the headlight, there are two more and a holder for the parking lights and one or two for the indicators.

have a look at the wiring harness DWG in the sticky post.

That diagram describes the wiring, not where the sidelamp goes though. Yes theres an extra wire loom unconnected, if thats the sidelamp, what would it connect to?

Have you got the correct sealed beam units? You need the ones with a small hole to poke the side light through so it shows inside the headlight, I've got a Morris minor which has the same lights as a mini but without the side light hole (normally listed as a 'pilot' light) because on a minor the side light is in the separate housing with the indicator below, if there's no hole in yours you've fitted the wrong lights.

The original sidelight bulb holder, with it's own silver reflector, would have been part of the 3 point headlight connector that plugs into the back of the sealed beam.

The sealed beam had a corresponding clear circle of glass in the reflector directly below the 3 prongs that lined up with the sidelight when you pushed the connector home. So it shone through.

Have you got the sealed beams with the little circle of clear glass in the reflector and have you got the correct connector with sidelight as part of it?

Ah that may be the reason then. My sealed beams have the three prong connector but do not have a hole or a circle of clear glass for the sidelight. I guess ive ended up with the wrong Lucas sealed beams!  :shy:

So you don't have this little clear "hole" in the back?

Does your headlight unit have the separate side light fitting and wiring though? If they have been converted they may have been removed (cut-off!)
