While we're on the subject of reversing and '97 MPI's, what would cause it to not stay in reverse? mine goes into reverse but when you let the clutch out it just pulls out. it's only done 32k miles.

Could be a number of things, most likely the bushes in Reverse Gear 'walking' out.

I'd suggest checking your carpets and other things first though, just to be sure there's nothing silly from stopping it going right in to Reverse.

If everything external is OK, then there's little else but to take the box out and strip it down.

As well as the Bushes in Reverse, the Main Shaft Bearing could be worn, the small end of the Layshaft or a bad gearbox casing.

How much movement is there of the engine on its mounts?
