Hi,

Mainly 3rd but also 2nd gear there is a noise from the engine bay. Sounds like a tractor, ONLY WHEN UNDER LOAD. The slightest acceleration you can hear it. Still drives fine though, 4th is clean, no noise. 2nd gear is always a bit tricky, (synchro?) but fine if you shift slowly.

Changed oil today to see if it may help as was due anyway.

Any ideas would be much appreciated. I will post a sound clip tomorrow.

Thanks,

Mike

One of the Bearings has no doubt collapsed, possibly the layshaft bearings.

Regardless and also with what else you've mentioned here about your gearbox, it will need stripping down to sort it. I would suggest anything less than a full overhaul would be foolhardy.

I'll add though that best stop driving it until this is sorted as you'll be damaging other expensive parts that one wouldn't ordinarily replace during a routine overhaul.

Totally agree with Moke Spider, do not drive further if you do not wish to destroy the gearbox.

Engine out and gearbox strip and rebuild unfortunately.

Thanks for the opinions. I think it must be something layshaft related also considering 4th is fine.

What is considered reasonable hours to drop an engine and remove gearbox?

Cheers

Going off the Service Station Association's recommendations, they suggest 14 hours. I've a BMC Dealer's guide somewhere, can't recall what that says.

With standard Minis, single carb, stock exhaust, pot joints I can R&R the gearbox in 3-1/2 to 4 hours, drive in, drive out, but largely depends on what facilities you have to work with.
