Hi everyone,

I'm currently replacing the inner and outer CV gaiters on my 1985 mini 998cc restoration project.

I searched and read a ton of threads on replacing the inner CV boot, but they all left me with my head spinning. I'm hoping for a little clarification.

The good news is I have already seperated both CV joints on both driveshafts, without damaging anything, gave everything a good clean up and inspected it for wear.

But now :

1) What's the right way to replace the inner cv gaiter (attached picture: left or right), I've seen it done both ways.

2) What's the reason of the longer part (part of the longer driveshaft), which is part of the inner CV joint/part of CV ball cage (attached picture: the one who sits on the left). I haven't seen that often.
Because of the position of the inner gaiter, the longer driveshaft will sits deeper inside the inner pot unlike the short one.

Many thanks,

Sepp

The one on the left looks like the remains of the early Metro pot joint and uses a different gaiter (both the joint and the gaiter are NLA)

The orientation of the boot on the left is the correct way (but not on that joint)

the inner boot is attached to the inner CV only. drive shaft not needed for assy.

these are the shafts from the working can and not ones you have acquired?

Very nice diagram MS :D

Might also add - use the more expensive Minispares boot, it will last indefinitely.

This compilation might be of assistance as you begin to work on this Mini B.

I dug all this up before doing this work on mine.

I'm just about to go into the garage and refit my O/S drive shaft assembly after having both inner pot joint gators split on me after less than a year / 1000 miles of driving.

I've opted for genuine rover parts (From minispares) this time as opposed to whatever my local mini place supplied me last time. Only a couple of quid more but the rubber seems better quality.

Hopefully I won't be doing this job again for a while.

From what I have read and what I made sure I did was to not mix up the orientation of where the balls on the end of the shaft seat into the pot joint. Fairly simple with the aid of a paint pen I "borrrowed" from work.

Thanks Moke Spider!

This forum and all the Posters here have been so helpful to me in the 6 years I have owned my Mini, from fixing simple bits to all the "major" work I've undertaken, so I hope this turns out to be helpful to any folks working on this area - it's good if I can give a little back!
