Does anyone know if a 998 timing cover fits a 1275 a+ or visversa?

Yes, interchangeable.

I tend to run with the 998 type (no breather) on all builds, but if you are likely to do a lot of shorter journeys, then the 1275 type would be better.

they are the same but is it was simplex you need to mod it slightly for clearance. think it is the "disc" shape that needs knocking out.

Yeah, if you're running a duplex chain, there's a dimple at rough the 2 O'clock position than needs to be knocked out. Look from the inside and you'll see it.

Why don't you run with the breather on the timing chain cover?

Cheers all. Since posting I had a look on ebay. There's a clean looking one for £12.50 posted. So just brought it.

Yeah, of course  :D

I don't run one p there because i) I find it's something in the way where there's little room and ii) in the Mini, on Left Handers, it's easy to suck neat Oil up it.

One is enough. If you need two, there's another issue that should be looked in to, although, as mentioned, if the car does a lot of shorter runs, (less than about 15 - 20 miles) then it may not get warm enough for long enough to 'burn off' moisture that's in the crankcase. The extra breather here can help.

Sorry to revive a seven year old topic, but after some research it seems many don't use a tensioner with a duplex chain. Is this A+ tensioner-bulge style of timing cover and its associated plate on the engine still used despite that?

You can run these covers and plates without a tensioner.

Be aware too, if running with these covers and plates, they use a different engine plate gasket than the earlier types, as well as obviously a different cover gasket.

Also,, while we all refer to them as " A+ " they actually appeared around 2 years before the A+, first in 1976 on the 1275 GT and eventually flowed through to all engines.
