Changed from an airbox to a K&N Pod filter some months ago when I first acquired my Mini, because the filter was really dirty. Took my mini out on the motorway for the first time ever today.

 

At 60 miles an hour the engine noise in the cabin was so loud I could barely hear myself speak, and after an hour of that continuously, I though my ears would bleed.

 

Is it supposed to be THAT loud with a pod filter?

 

Am using a 76 mk4 with a 998 cc Series A engine and a HS4 carb by the way.

It shouldn't be that bad, louder but not extreme

yes there is quite a noticeable difference as the engine noise is not turned away by the elbow.

 

some builds did not have the bulkhead closed behind the central clock  so can be even louder.

 

but incorrect timing can add to noise.

They are usually quieter at a constant throttle setting as on a motorway. Far more noisy under acceleration. As Nick points out the filter is just behind the bulkhead so you are pretty well on top of it. Depends how much you want the H.P. gain you get with one set up properly. K & N element in the standard housing whilst not giving as much as gain is more civilized.

Yea pretty sure the bulkhead is not properly sealed. I converted my car from the triple clock to the central speedo. I imagine there are ways to better insulate it.

Not sure mine is properly tuned, so I think I'll go back to the airbox for now. I wonder where I could get an intake pipe so that I could site the filter away from the bulkhead?

It was a standard air box with holes drilled around the outside and a K&N element. Sounded lovely but was getting tiresome, the original box is a lot quieter and I dont really notice the difference in power - does seem to run a bit smoother though.

Thanks for the link! I've read it before, but unfortunately he didnt compare against the standard paper filter. I've read elsewhere that the standard paper filter filters better than the K&N ones, and when clean has just as good airflow. Considering the price difference between the two is nearly 10x, its hard for me to justify putting in a drop in K&N into the airbox vs the paper type, and just changing the paper type every 5k miles or so.

It was unique to the carb Coopers of the early '90s. I doubt they are available new so the only way is to keep your eyes and ears open in the usual places. Sorry I can't be of any more help with that one.

What Mr Calver neglected to do on this test is to use any kind of radius into the carb when fitting the cone type filters. The standard cast elbow that the standard airbox mounts to forms a smooth entry into the carb. When using the cone filter there is no such luxury unless you fit a radius/stub stack of some sort. I suspect if he'd done this the results might have been different.
