Hi there,

What's a full fibreglass body likely to Cost? Where can I get one from? Anyone got any experience with this? My intention is to build a fast road car, hopefully as light as I can get it.

Cheers Alfie.

Hi there,

Here's a site with a lot of ideas for you,It's an old site not much input now, most have moved to Facebook.Trying to find a 'Minus' nowadays looks to be like trying to find the proverbial needle in a haystack. But you can always hope.    http://www.miniminus.co.uk

I've had yet another respray since the pics on this site were put on, now back to its original 1990's colours

Minus' aren't massively light, mine weighs in at 600kg wet without driver. I am building a spaceframe for it over the next year with the aim to take it racing and wanting better safety and rigidity, Hopefully keeping it around 600kg or lighter depending on how much the frame will weigh and how much I can loose by getting rid of subframes.

If light weight is your ultimate goal (which in a road car is somewhat pointless and likely to just make for an uncomfortable toy imo) then stick to something like an ABS fiberglass skin and a full spaceframe rather than an older minus or domino grp monocoque.

As for money minus' tend to go for anything between 3-5k depending on condition and how much the buyer wants the car, there is one for sale for 7.5k atm apparently but I can't vouch for what it looks like as I have only seen some low res pictures.

Incidentally heres mine ;)

there are no approved fibreglass shells out there. they all will need an IVA if done correctly.

An alternative is to get a classic kit car using GRP body and mini subframes/mechanical parts. If it has been previously registered in the UK then you won't need IVA.

For a lightweight mini based GRP kit the Mini Marcos is a good starting point. This is 530kg with all standard suspension, subframes, and glass in full road trim. If you start replacing glass with perspex and other lightening options you should get well under 500kg.

There are plently of other classic mini-based kits to consider including Jem, and GTM.

The Minus that's for sale looks like good value if you're after one and planning to spend money on it, this one has a banging engine in it and is pretty high spec all round.  Certainly much cheaper than buying one like mine for £3.5k and then upgrading it.  It went through the registration process earlier this year and is properly registered as a Status Mini Minus, so it's all clear on that score too.  I've only seen pics and vidoes of the car but know someone that knows the owner, he reckons he doesn't really want to sell it.

Nick is right though, unless you buy something that's already properly registered any other option needs to be IVA'd to be on the road legally.  Sure you can buy a shell and swap the bits over,  but it's a risk.
