Here's a tough one to ask, hoping that you're intimately familiar with the rod-change gearboxes.  -My knucklehead

tale of woe.   -This wouldn't be such a big deal if I hadn't swung the engine/trans back into the car last week

and now have half of the ancillaries hooked up.

I forgot that I had purchased a rod change seal kit from spares, MSSK050, and found it after the engine went in.

So underneath I went, with far less visibility than I had on the bench where I should have done this first.

I had trouble getting the old seal out around the shaft, so I drilled a small hole through the seal and got a better

grab to pull it out.  The new collar bushing with o-ring tapped into place, and the new seal as well against it.

I go to clean up the tools and notice 1/4"-3/8" is broken off the end of the drill bit.   I've looked everywhere twice

and before I totally freak out I'm hoping one of you could tell me if I could have shoved that bit into the trans?

--OR behind the seal where I couldn't get a good look before this happened, does the case step down to the

size of the shaft (the seat for the collar bushing) and there's no way a piece of 3/16" drill bit could have gone on in?

My first attempts to work the rod through the gears are only confusing me and I'm thinking of hooking the

gear lever up to row through the pattern carefully and see what it feels like.

Your collective opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Jeff,

If you were able to get the seal flush in it's bore, then I doubt the broken end of the drill would still be in there.

Just inside that bore is the Interlock spool, it's a complete sleeve with no breaks or open sections facing the back, other than the centre of it, which has the shift shaft in it. With the space that's left, there's only enough room for the Bush and the Seal.

I bet when you were underneath and with limited space, you will have put the entire drill down at a bit of an awkward angle, you would not have had a lot of room I know.

With that said, you will have broke the drill bit possibly knocking the drill bit against something, the under body, floor, something, doesn't take much to snap drill bits.

I think that is where my bet would be. I know you said you have looked everywhere, but it will have rolled when it broke off, slippery little buggers !!

I certainly hope you're both correct, and I believe you are.  If I could just find that end piece of bit I would sleep better.  --And

I assure you I scoured a very clean floor looking for it, thrice.   --Made me ill, especially after trying to work the rod through

the gear changes.    ---I had some problems with one of the 4 gear positions.  I tried rocking the car a bit and am unable

to work the clutch yet as the whole lump just went in and the slave hasn't been bled yet.

Any reason why the rod shouldn't go through all the positions as it sits, such as on a bench?

You'll know if it's in there if you can't get a gear
