I'm in the process of removing my engine. I have the Rover workshop manual.

Step 8 says remove the engine steady bar - upper.

Referring the section on removing the engine steady bar - upper they make it sound simple. It says remove nut and bolt. In the picture in the manual it shows the nut facing upwards. I do not have this, there is no nut on the mount point closest to the bulk head. Is it underneath therefore the workshop manual being incorrect?

Thanks,

Ben

Someone has probably assembled it the other way round, easier to get the bolt in.

Bolt faces down, nut on the bottom. Just in case the nut comes loose (if it's not seized to the bush collet) then it will act as a pin and keep the engine from going all gangnam style in the bay

Seems like this step is then premature in their removal process. I can't see a way to access the nut without removing a lot more first!

Yep, welcome to working on a mini!

Coupled with "refitting is the reversal of removal" these workshop manuals are often a bit tongue-in-cheek with how simply they make everything sound. You get used to it!

Yep, fraid there will be quite a bit of 'stuff' to get out the way before you get easy access to the bulkhead bolt and nut (underneath). All depends on what type / model of MPI/SPI you have as to what is in the way. various loom wires, the brake servo, heat shroud for manifold (if you have the original manifold) and earth strap are all over on that side. Good Luck, its not so bad once you get into it...and take lots of pictures if you've not done it before so the 'refitting is the reversal of removal' makes more sense :)

Depending on model, it's fiddly but not too bad - lock off nut with a stubby spanner and use an extension bar on the ratchet to undo the bolt from above. Don't forget to put the earth strap back on. There may also be spacer washers on the bolts that attach to the block.

I just removed mine, a 1998 SPI

My bolt was in the same configuration not on the bottom

This could be very fiddly if you are working with jack stands but I had a four post lift and actually had no problem at all getting to it with a double length ratchet extension it came right out without removing anything else
