Cut it shorter? I think more important is modifying the 2-3 and 3-2 shift to be less zig-zag and more direct.

Can't really do that on a mini, due to the ball being inside a box, if you extend that, you need to make the top cup mounting higherwheel-a-dealers did a bit on it once carnt remember what car thou

IMO, the kit from Mini Spares is very fairly priced and I've found them quite OK, though I do fit an O Ring inside and extra screw to the extension cup to take any rock out of it and strengthen the way it fits. After improving the mounting of the shifter body itself, I gotta say, I really love these big time.
Mind you, if the rest of your shifter set up is worn or in poor condition, then don't expect miracles from these or any other quick shifter.
Give what's needed to make a short throw shifter ('Quick Shifter'), it's not really the easiest thing to make at home. The lower part of the stick, between the big and smaller balls needs to be extended and the the larger ball mount in the shifter body, moved higher by the same amount.

Here is an article of how to make one for a Datsun, although the concept is similar for a mini.

As Spider has mentioned it involves cutting and lengthening the short end of the shifter and also raising the pivot point upwards. Minispares etc make a nice machined spacer to raise the pivot point, making something like this would be a little tricky at home.

I have just fitted the ones sold on ebay. silver and purple thing for £45 delivery.
remove the old one and the locating pins. cleaned it all up and a bit of new grease. shoved the new one in place and screwed in bolts.
its perfect, all gear work perfect, i was very surprised due to other comments in the past.
