Hi all, currently in the process of doing some restoration work on my mini and I need to cut out the inner sills and do some repairs on the floor but my car has some factory sound deadening. Question is how do you get rid of it? I've tapped a few places where the flutes are in the floor and is sort of crumbles but it won't do that everywhere. So what is the best way to get it all off? Don't mind spending some time on it as I realise it's not just gunna fall out.

Any help would be appreciated
Dan

Heat and a scraper. Its a horrible job and youll need a gallon of thinners to clean up afterwards as it leaves a tar like residue. If you can avoid removing it, do so.

ive always found heater and scraper as above, but i have found that prewarm the deadening a bit, then when you start scraping heating the actual scraper cuts it really well...

Horrible job if your doing lots of it. use tar and glue remover if you want to get it properly clean,

Sounds odd but I heated mine from underneath with a halogen lamp. Made its warm enough to cut and roll up. I decided to only remove the areas that needed removing to repair though. It will cut and leave a neat edge if you warm it.

Always done the opposite! Freeze spray or a cold day and just hammer and chisel.

Then thinners to clean it up or similar.

I agree with jonny f - do it cold and it is a lot less messy, breaks off in coaster sized chunks.

I got mine off in the cold and an electric vibrating chisel.

An old wood chisel moved it for me without any heat, hold the chisel at a low angle to get it under the edge of the mat and tap it with a light hammer. Very satisfying when a big bit flakes off like toffee out of a tray.

Might have to try both methods and see which works best hot or cold

Thanks

Some bits come off cold in big chunks, the difficult bits warm up and scrape off.

Cold weather and screwdriver for me, perfect round about now! 😁
Don't forget to wear goggles and gloves as it goes everywhere!
